Starting in the 1930’s the innovative and creative styling of BENRUS watches started to attract quite a following. New designs such as cushion and rectangular shaped watch casings were introduced and the brand became known as a leader in style and design across the watchmaking industry. In the 1960’s BENRUS became a relied upon brand supplying the U.S. armed forces. BENRUS took the same innovation and dependability of its military-issued watches and applied it to its many skindiver watches of that time, including the brand’s Sea Lord models and Orbit Robot.
The 1972 Orbit Robot timepiece shows off this perfect fusion between the stylish design cues of an era and the reliability of a functional tool watch. Given the rarity of this particular model, it was important for BENRUS to celebrate it by maintaining the exact and very contemporary dimensions as the original. As always, BENRUS takes every step in bringing forward the same design but with improved performance with modern day materials.
Featuring the same classic ‘UFO’ cushion case style in stainless steel with a vibrant fumé dial along with orange and white hands, the new BENRUS Orbit Robot is a funky yet fashionable Swiss Made dive timepiece. Some upgrades include a Soprod P024 Swiss movement, domed sapphire crystal, and screw-down crown for 20ATM water resistance. For maximum versatility and without changing the overall dimensions, the inner lug size has also been increased to accommodate 20mm straps.
One of the stand-out features of the original and the current reissue is the grey fumé dial, which was paid particular attention to in order to fully replicate the depth and radiance of the original grey watch model. The center of the dial starts with a light grey metallic and darkens as you move towards the outer edge. The date window has been maintained, but the day window removed to allow the dial to be fully appreciated. The case back features a custom BENRUS robot orbiting the Earth, a fun update made to honor the name of the watch.
